WELCOME TO THE SECOND ANNUAL LSDS.
The Loose Screw Dual Sport is brought to you by members of the Kamloops Dual Sport Riders.
This is a Plated ride. Your bike must be Licensed.
LSDS '08 will be held August 22-24 just outside Kamloops BC at Monte Creek. The 22nd and the 24th are arrival and departure days. August 23rd is the ride day. The rides will depart at approximately 8:30am. We have a private 8 acre lot to hold the event that is nice and level with lots of room for camping. There are no facilities at this lot. Bring with you what you think you will need. We will have portable toilets there, that is all. As an added bonus it is right on the Thompson River. Directions are now posted. If you are not interested in camping just click the travel bc logo on the links page for a list of local places to stay.
We are offering three different routes for all levels of riders. Each route will have a roll chart (route sheet) and you will be responsible for guiding yourself. There will be no sweep riders. It is always good to travel with a couple of friends and work together finding your way.
There will be an "A" route for experts. If you are an expert you should be able to handle anything we toss at you. This is a "dualsport" ride but don't let that fool you. We won't get too crazy but it will be interesting. The "A" route is NOT for larger bikes. In fact I recommend that any bikes on the "A" should be dirt bikes with minimal stuff to make them street legal. Fresh tires Highly recommended.
There will also be a "B" route for more intermediate riders. This route usually has the most riders as it covers a larger percentage of the riders. A "B" rider should be pretty confident with their skills and the bike. Dirt tires in good shape (50% or better) will be ok on this type of route as will some of the larger bikes like the KLR and DR. If you plan to ride the "B" you should expect to get some scratches and possibly even drop your bike (it happens to the best of us).
Last but not least is the "C" route. This route should cover the rest of you. The "C" is typically for the less experienced rider or the rider on a larger less capable bike. This type of route is a combination of pavement and dirt roads and is a lot more relaxed than the other two. Just about any tire will do on a "C" ride as long as it holds air. Don't take this as "a boring ride", a "C" ride can be lots of fun as well. Any day out on the bike is better than the best day at work! The "C" will concentrate more on picturesque country roads and scenery rather than wrestling your bike all day.
The entry fee will include Camping, your Route Sheet, a Steak Dinner saturday night, a Shirt and Prizes.
'08 Registration is now closed!!
FEB.18/08 UPDATE!!
The work has once again started and I will cut right to the chase. Some things will be a little different this year.
-
First of all we will have a limited entry. After last years success we are anticipating more interest. We are prepared for the bigger numbers but in order to maintain quality (and elbow room) we have set a limit. If you are planning to attend please sign up early to secure your spot.
-
The event will again be held on the same piece of private property and is open to Registered Participants Only.
-
You must Pre Register for the ride by July 15/08. Entries post marked after July 15th will not be accepted....period. This may sound harsh but will ensure that everyone gets their dinner, shirt, etc.
Registration is now open giving everyone tonnes of time to get those registrations in!! That is all I will toss at you for now. Stay tuned for more details.
MAY 26/08
The weather is still wet, wet, wet and cooler than normal!! I now have been out and done some scouting for the "A" route. Of course I have found a bunch of dead ends but also found a couple of spots that could prove to be interesting! Even broke a darn signal light when I took a tumble. Damn wet log! Got some ideas for changes to the "C" route and will be looking at those real soon. Seems to be lots of downed tree's as well so I will have to dust the cobb webs off the ol' chain saw to get those cleaned up. Some off our sponsors have started to step up to the plate and we have some prizes arriving already. Gunna be another great year.
JUNE 2/08
Got some more work done this weekend. Did a bunch of pre riding for the "C" route and even managed to get roll chart notes for the morning half. Lots of wildlife. Even saw a couple of fawns that were no more than a few weeks old. We were less than five feet from them. So tempting to reach out and touch, of course we did not. Still have a little work for the second half of the "C" route. Should have that one wrapped up soon.
JULY 6/08
The work continues. Today I completed the pre riding for the "C" route and also completed the roll chart. The total km for the route is 278.2km. The lunch/gas stop is at 157.9km leaving just 120.3km for the afternoon. A nice scenic ride on a bunch of backroads in this area suitable for all riders. Tomorrow will probably do more work on the "B". T-shirt design has been submitted, just waiting for a mock up so I can approve it (or make changes!) Still a few prizes expected to show up soon which will make for some nice stuff again this year. Regi is a little down at the moment but expect that will change next week as we near the deadline!
JULY 11/08
And then there was the "B". Oddly the distance from last year and this year is the same without the option I have added! The basic route is a total of 276km (same as last year) with 135km in the morning and 141 in the afternoon. With the option in the morning it brings the morning section up to 137.2km (only 2.2km more) giving a total of 278.2 for the day. Even stranger is the "B" route and the "C" route are identical in over all distance. When I discovered this I thought I was losing my mind. I double checked everthing and that is just how it turned out. Creepy!!! The route is done and so is the roll chart. This weekend I will be workin' the "A" route over.
JULY 14/08
Sorry folks...Seems the site was down today , not sure what happened but it is up again now. Nothing I could do anyway cause I was busy swatting mosquitoes out on the "A" route. Lots of blow down on the upper and lower loose screw trails. I got the upper trail cleaned up but still have a little work on the lower trail to do. As some of you may remember from last year I had to make some last minute changes to the "A" route due to road deactivations. This made the afternoon a little more like a "C" route than a "A". The three cut blocks that I had to take out last year are back in for this year as well as some other trails making the afternoon an "A" route again. An added bonus (for me) is the fencing that was put thru the middle of the third cut block has a gate, thought I might have to build my own. I have to give a big pat on the back to my helper (you know who you are) on Sunday. Big bike packing a big chain saw and gas and tools, etc. out on the "A" route. I don't think his bike is scratch free anymore!! My helmet is off to you my friend, job well done! Now I just have to chart it and were ready to go!
JULY 21/08
AAAHHHH......Boy that beer tastes good.....Huh, Oh, Focus! The upper and lower Loose Screw trails are open and ready to go. Today I was out for over seven (7) hours working on the afternoon portion of the "A". My thermo at the house reads 34, Just how I like it..The weather hot and the beer frosty. The afternoon portion of the "A" is now complete and the roll chart is done. Got the three cut blocks back in. The first one is pretty old and has a quad track thru but the last two are really fresh with lots of spoke busters. This all ties in with several other little fun trails that were part of the plan for last year until mr. machine operator (forestry) buggered it up. The afternoon is only about 20km longer than last year but it is now a more fitting "A" rather than more of a "C". So....The morning section up to lunch/gas is 111.7km in length and the afternoon is 72.3km for a total of 184km. A little marking left to do and one big dead fall to clear then we are good to go on the "A". Beer is gone...Gotta go. OOHH Yeah...Got my first flat of the year thanks to a broken off chain saw file (not mine). Thankfully it happened about 15km from home. Thanks to stiff side walls and a rim lock I just rode it home at a slightly reduced speed. Ok...where did that other beer go.
AUG. 5/08
The "B" and the "C" route have now been pre rode and all is looking good. A couple of minor corrections have been made to the "C" route sheet. Our test riders were never more than .2km out on there speedo's. A word of caution to the "C" riders....there is a small section in the afternoon that has some soft sand on the Lower Duck Range Road. This soft rutted sand has claimed one ankle...Be Carefull out there! The "C" route took our pre riders aprox. 8 hours with stops for route sheet reading, lunch, gas and a little sight seeing. Some will be faster I'm sure but figure on close to an 8 hour day over all. The "B" route sheet is spot on. I was never more than .1km out. The "B" will take most riders a full 8+ hours. The route is very close to last years route with just a few small changes.
AUG. 11/08
Well it looks like the final number of riders is 73 this year, another good turn out. Lots of local BC participants, several from Washington and even one from Montana. Everything is in the final stage of prep. and is coming together nicely. Today I sent everyone there route sheets by e-mail. Just print them off and tape them together for your route sheet holders. If you don't have a route sheet holder I might have a couple available for purchase. This year M&M Meats did not step up to the plate so we have gone with Coopers Foods for most of our dinner items. We will have a bigger steak this year and I will be marinating them soon. Fresh is Best Salsa will have some chips and salsa there saturday afternoon for when the riders come in to help get you through till dinner. Canadian Springs is helping out with some drinking water. The weather has cooperated enough that the local corn is finally ready. We will have some nice fresh local corn from Peter Murry's Corn Farm to go with dinner also. MMMM.....I can't wait!!
The day will shape up like this: 8:00am Riders meeting, 8:30am all riders should be out of camp and on there route, 6:00pm Dinner (sure hope your back!), 7:00pm ish Draw for prizes. We might push the prizes back a little so everyone has time to eat but I don't want to leave it to late.
NOTE: The "B" route sheet has "LSDS'07" at the start. Just a brain fart on my part. Not to worry, the rest of the chart is correct. To much work to fix and re e-mail it to everyone, if you are concerned just change the 7 to a 8 !!
AUG. 15/08
If anyone coming to the ride has any questions you had better ask ASAP. I will only be available this weekend. As of MONDAY I will have very limited computer access if any and will not be able to respond. See ya in a week.
AUG. 26/08
Now that the dust has settled (pun intended) I will get to work on the wrap up page. Anyone who took pictures please submit them so I can get them posted on the site. Just go to the "contact us" page and send the to the e-mail link provided.
